Over four weeks you will be given the opportunity to meet like-minded authors, discuss your ideas and written work and the market for non-fiction writing
Guidance will be given on how to research across a wide range of subject matter, with a view to constructing a long piece of work. By the end of the course you have the skills to write a synopsis and prepare a book proposal to agents and publishers.
Week 1: Opportunity to discuss ideas
This first session discusses the range of non-fiction works and the wide choice of areas open to writers as well as the importance of structure, narrative, character, and the flow of words on the page.
Week 2: The construction of a long piece of work
The construction of a long piece of work: title, sub-title, relevant (competing) publications in the field, establishing the range of content, chapter by chapter progression.
Week 3: Research techniques and resources
Interviews, questionnaires, use of libraries and their availability, use of the internet. What is a fact? What is libel?
Week 4: One-to-ones and feedback
One to one with Simon: up to twenty minutes depending on the number in the group.
