Importance of Setting in Writing
Sat 24 Mar 2018 to Sat 24 Mar 2018
Setting is an essential element of creative writing, but is too often overshadowed by its more famous cousins, plot and character.
Setting is more than just background: done well it strengthens mood and meaning and helps to create context and emotional impact. While writers agonise about creating believable characters and workable plots, they often pay too little attention to place and time – the essential backdrop against which the drama unfolds. What impact does setting have on your character? How does it influence them? Creating a vivid, believable setting is equally important in non-fiction. This workshop uses a series of exercises to add depth to your fiction or non-fiction writing and is suitable for all levels.

Tutor: Linda McVeigh is a writer with considerable success in competitions, including first prize in the Charleston Small Wonder Short Story Festival slam (in 2007 and again in 2011), first prize in the Rainy Cities Short Stories prize in 2010, and first prize in the 2011 Asham Award, judged by Sarah Waters. She also won the inaugural Brighton Prize in 2014. She is currently writing a novel.
