Manchester Met Short Course: Crime Fiction
Tue 15 May 2018 to Thu 17 May 2018
Play detective by putting selected crime stories under the metaphorical microscope and identify the specific aspects of style, craft, tone, plotting and characterisation that make them intriguing to read.

This three-day course offers students an opportunity to look closely at crime fiction, to study its core elements, and to develop your own practice in the genre. It combines critical study of crime fiction with creative work in the genre. Through practical exercises, reading and discussion, you will discover how storytelling techniques that are essential elements of the crime genre – suspense, misdirection, conflict and interrogation – can be usefully applied in all forms and modes of fiction writing.

You will have the opportunity to practise techniques of pacing, plotting, dialogue, structure and control of information, to the benefit of your own prose writing, under the guidance of experienced critics, writers and crime experts. Those submitting assessed work for accreditation will complete a 2,000-word crime story and a 1,000-word critical commentary.
