Students as writing partners: Building effective teacher-student partnerships in Creative Writing
Where do mentorship and networking fit into learning and teaching the craft of writing? This seminar questions what teachers and students of Creative Writing expect of each other and explores the best models for partnership as well as identifying certain pitfalls associated with these partnerships and how these might best be avoided
The objectives of the seminar will be to document initiatives within the HEI’s Creative Writing Department and other initiatives taking place across Creative Writing departments in the HE sector which involve students and teachers working in partnership to produce publication, performance and networking opportunities.
We will document these initiatives by inviting representatives from other departments across the country to attend the seminar and either briefly present their activities through the informal Show and Tell aspect of the seminar, where a range of specific student-teacher partnership initiatives will be briefly introduced, followed by more lengthy informal discussion; or to critically engage with them through longer Paper Presentations. The key outputs of this seminar will be a report (‘activity document’) that documents these initiatives and an online archive of papers presented.
We aim for students and teachers to be equally represented in the seminar, and, with this in mind, the HEI will provide any interested students with an editing service (via email) offering advice on papers intended for submission.
