The Essay: Taking Ideas for a Walk
Tue 19 Jun 2018 to Wed 20 Jun 2018
The essay, for many, exists as a form of writing associated with assessment and examination – a formulaic procedure that bears little or no resemblance to its original literary expression of risk- taking - as the word essayer suggests – to attempt, have a go, try something out. What happens when we think of essays less as objects or nouns… and more of “essaying” as an activity, a kind of writing adventure?
This conference is an investigation of the essay form and its aesthetics, as well as its function within the academy and the wider reading public. The conference will gather together a number of key internationally renowned practitioners and proponents of the genre.
