A six session course on writing and editing children’s picture books and early readers, pre-teen novels, non-fiction formats, and devising multi-platform concepts for all age categories
The classes are geared to your ideas and work in progress with in-class exercises, assignments and opportunities for one-to-one feedback and support between classes. Useful handouts provided on your specialist area including picture book formats and layouts. Weekly skill sessions to improve your writing techniques. Topics will include: ideas generation, creating engaging openings, scene-setting and creating characters, plot and theme, creating satisfying endings plus combining text and illustrations effectively, age appropriate language, editing your work, industry requirements and guidelines, submitting work to agents and publishers.
Ideal for people who want to learn all aspects of writing for children and experiment with different forms and ideas whether with a view to publication or for personal creative development and for their families. The course will also provide focus and support for those engaged in longer projects. Learn new techniques, share your work, get professional feedback and receive inspirational tuition in between writing at home.
Tutors will be Simona Sideri, children’s publisher/editor, and Chalk director, writer Ardella Jones. Other members of the Chalk team will be on-hand to advise on drama and animation projects including Jonathan Wolfman, CBBC producer/script editor for BAFTA award-winning series Tracy Beaker Returns, The Dumping Ground and Wolfblood, playwright/theatre director Danusia Iwaszko, former Children’s Channel producer, Jo Hepplewhite, Gillian Corderoy, scriptwriter for 64 Zoo Lane, Everything’s Rosie, Cloud Babies.
