The Rabbit Tetralogy
John Updike
Book Summary:
John Updike recorded postwar small town America through the eyes of former high school basketball star and general low-life Harry 'Rabbit' Angstrom. The four novels - each written in present tense at the end of a decade - follow the inner life of the American everyman.
Why I Like It:
Though Harry Angstrom is an uncaring scumbag, greedy, lascivious and disloyal throughout, Updike somehow makes him loveable. We forgive his misdeeds and his death is one of the most poignant in literature. The achievement is astounding. Updike writes about the present moment with a meticulous, painterly eye. The Rabbit books are thoughtful, intimate, profound and funny.
