The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (SBT) is the independent charity which cares for the world’s greatest Shakespeare heritage sites and promotes the enjoyment and understanding of his work, life and times all over the world. The SBT is looking for an artist in residence to work across the Shakespeare properties in Stratford-upon-Avon and with its staff. More information is available at www.shakespeare.org The SBT’s creative and learning programmes will be regularly funded by Arts Council England from April 2018.
The residency is for 12 days across winter (Nov - Feb) 2017/18 and will result in six new commissions responding to Shakespeare, Stratford-upon-Avon, the SBT’s properties and its people. There is a budget of £2,400 for the residency and £3,000 for the commissions. Both are inclusive of any expenses and VAT.
The artist or artists could come from any discipline and we would be particularly interested in hearing from visual, participatory and digital artists as well as musicians.
We are looking for a creative and inspiring contemporary artist or artists who will want to spend their time in Stratford-upon-Avon engaging with staff and visitors and participating in the life of the organisation. You will be flexible and a strong communicator as well as an exciting artist. There could be informal opportunities to share your practice during this time and it is imagined that a public sharing of the commissions would take place in spring 2018. There is a very small amount of budget to support this (c.£500).
To apply please explain your suitability for the role and approach in no more than 500 words, give details of two referees and submit three examples of your work (total attachments no larger than 25MB or by a web link) to commissioning@shakespeare.org.uk
Deadline for completed applications midnight 20 July 2017.
