Campaign in Poetry
Deadline: Sun 28 Sep 2014
The Emma Press has launched a call for poems about UK politics in the run-up to the General Election, as well as a call for poems about voting

The UK General Election is approaching and we are excited! We want to create a book which reflects people’s concerns in this unpredictable period in British politics, where disaffection is on the rise and people are either sinking (further) into apathy or launching into activism. We’re looking for poems which consider the Coalition, MPs, party politics, party leaders, the election campaigns and the rise of UKIP and the far Right. We want poems about the NHS, Scottish independence, local councils, education policies and arts funding, and we want poems which question the very set-up of UK politics. Are politicians too similar? Are they too bland? Can you write a poem about Nick Clegg?

We want to find poems which engage with what is happening in UK politics right now. Join our campaign in poetry and help us to capture a sense of what the nation feels in the run-up to the General Election. We’re especially interest in finding poets who would be interested in continuing to write poems nearer the election.  Read the press release here.

This anthology will be edited by Rachel Piercey and Emma Wright and illustrated by Emma Wright. Rachel Piercey is currently an editor at Cadaverine magazine and her illustrated pamphlet of love poems, The Flower and the Plough, was published by the Emma Press in January 2013. Emma Wright runs The Emma Press.

To submit to this anthology, please send up to 3 poems (each no longer than 100 lines) in the body of your email AS WELL AS attached in a single Word document to campaign@theemmapress.com, accompanied with a covering letter addressed to Rachel and Emma (just in the body of your email – no need to attach it as a separate document!).

All poets must be members of the Emma Press Club, which means you must either have bought a book from the Emma Press website this calendar year, or already be in an Emma Press book.
