Internships at Gladstone's Library
Deadline: Fri 25 Apr 2014
We are looking to fill three posts for interns at Gladstone’s Library: one in marketing and two in the Library

Marketing Internship (focus on copy writing – including website and social media – and design)

Gladstone’s Library is seeking to recruit a graduate with a good honours degree in a relevant discipline to live and work as an intern for a period of (minimum) three months from 30 June 2014.

A world-class institution, Gladstone's engenders a high level of affection amongst its many visitors and has a truly unique offer:

  • National memorial to William Gladstone
  • Britain’s only Prime Ministerial library
  • Britain’s finest residential library
  • Spectacular Grade 1 listed building
  • Home to over 250,000 printed items
  • Host venue for courses, conferences and events
  • A dedicated research environment
  • A place to be creatively inspired

Gladstone’s Library attracts visitors from all over the UK and from many parts of the world: academics, clergy, students, writers, booklovers, tourists and many more.

It offers a unique and atmospheric environment in which to read, write, relax or reflect. With over 250,000 printed items at one end of the building and two floors of bedrooms at the other, it is, for many people, nothing less than heaven on earth.

Marketing has become one of the main drivers of our business development plan and we are looking for a graduate with a good honours degree in a relevant discipline to work within the marketing team.  The main duties will include helping to push the business forward by:

  • Developing a high standard of copy writing for courses, events and other activities eg newsletters
  • Design of flyers and other publicity/marketing material using Adobe InDesign
  • Content management of the website
  • Promoting all aspects of the Library’s work through social media networks, Trip Advisor etc

The Marketing Intern must be able to demonstrate the highest level of verbal and written skills and must be a proficient user of Microsoft Office.  Some job specific training will be given but it is expected that he/she will have previous general experience of most of the above tasks. The Marketing Intern will work closely with other members of staff but will also be expected to work effectively on their own once tasks have been assigned and to take the initiative in offering creative solutions where necessary.

Library Internships

The Library at Gladstone’s Library is many things:  chiefly, it is a spectacle, a dedicated research environment and a place to be creatively inspired.  Its users include academics, clergy, students, the general public, creative writers, and many more.  The Library team’s priority is ensuring that the environment retains its charismatic character, welcoming in new users while allowing experienced users to benefit from the silent working environment.

The position of Library Intern is, therefore, a diverse one.  Interns divide their time between working with the Library team and individual projects (the split is roughly 60/40 in favour of working with the Library team).  A typical day might involve:

  • Two shifts on the Library’s Enquiry Desk, the first point of call for library users
  • Reshelving and cataloguing
  • Individual project work
  • Reviewing library collections
  • Promoting the library through social media, blog posts, and images

This post would suit an individual who is seeking experience in librarianship as well as graduates who would appreciate the chance to work on research projects in one of the UK’s most significant collections.  Irrespective of background, the successful candidate must be able to deliver excellent customer service, and be enthusiastic about working on a variety of tasks with a variety of people.

Library Interns are expected to demonstrate the highest levels of expression and accuracy in both written and verbal communication. All library staff and interns are required to complete the Library’s training courses, which ensure a standard level of core competencies while ensuring that each staff member receives the training that they need in order to work both independently and as part of the Library team.
