Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the UK's largest and most popular Universities
We are the University for World Class Professionals.
Established in 1998 within the Department of English at MMU, the Manchester Writing School is a thriving centre of creative excellence working to benefit the literary community at large, hosting a vibrant series of public reading events, a leading programme of outreach activities, a major international writing competition and a biennial festival of children’s literature. Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy is the Writing School’s Creative Director. At the core of the School’s work is the university’s ambitious MA Creative Writing programme, available to study on campus in Manchester, and also internationally through online distance learning in the Virtual Writing School.
The Master’s programme is designed to familiarise would-be writers and teachers with the literary industries and their place within them. This uniquely rounded course combines a strong practical element with a substantial academic component. It is one of the most successful programmes of its kind running in the UK today with 30 students and graduates having launched their first books since 2007. The MA is taught by a team of distinguished practising writers and critics. In 2012/13 these include Sherry Ashworth, Paul Batchelor, Heather Beck, Andrew Biswell, Nicola Matthews-Browne, Eleanor Byrne, Catherine Fox, Carol Ann Duffy, Nikolai Duffy, Rachel Genn, Livi Michael, Gregory Norminton, Adam O’Riordan, Michael Symmons Roberts, Jacqueline Roy, Nicholas Royle, Andrew Rudd and Jean Sprackland.
Members of the Writing School also contribute to a thriving undergraduate English Literature programme at MMU. The programme incorporates a joint honours pathway in English and Creative Writing, which attracts more than five applicants for each of around 48 places. Creative Writing options are also available to other cohorts of students studying single, joint and combined honours honours English.
We are looking for a writer with a strong track record of publishing either fiction or children’s writing, an established reputation and experience of teaching creative writing.
