University of Southampton in collaboration with The Nuffield Theatre
The Department of English at the University of Southampton invites applications for a two year Temporary Lectureship in Script Writing and Performance, combined with a Writer in Residency at the Nuffield Theatre. We are seeking someone with experience of working in the professional theatre who is the author of at least three plays that have been professionally produced, who is able to teach script writing to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and who enjoys working with young people.
The Department of English demonstrates excellence in all periods of English Literature, and includes strengths in Creative Writing, Film, and Digital Humanities. We have a dynamic and collaborative research culture, both within and across periods, and enjoy strong inter-disciplinary links with other departments in the Faculty of Humanities and the wider university. We have an excellent reputation for teaching, valuing both research-led teaching and teaching-led research, and are committed to knowledge exchange and public engagement.
You will contribute to the research activity of the Department by writing plays and performance pieces that are excellent in themselves, and inspired by our many and varied research projects across the whole range of literary and cultural history, from the Anglo-Saxon period to the 21st century, and which also combine with other disciplines in the Faculty (e.g. History and Music) and the wider university (e.g. Science; Medicine; Economics; Law; Geography). This is an exciting opportunity to write a play which is also on the cutting edge of knowledge.
As Writer in Residence at the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton, you will also contribute, along with the Nuffield’s other associate artists, to the Artist Development Programme at the theatre by mentoring emerging playwrights, and contributing to the theatre’s monthly programming meetings. The Nuffield will:
- Offer you dramaturgical support throughout the play-writing process.
- Provide rehearsal space to workshop, and mount readings of your plays in development.
- Assemble creative teams of directors and actors to support development.
The aim is to achieve a full production of at least one play at the Nuffield and on tour.
The post will commence on 1 October 2013.
The closing date for this post is 11 July 2013. Please apply online through www.jobs.soton.ac.uk or alternatively telephone 023 8059 2421 for an application form. Please quote vacancy reference number 249113F4 on all correspondence.
