Anosmia
The term anosmia derives from the Greek an (without) and osme (odor); it refers to the absence or impairment of the sense of smell. Anosmia is the inability to understand odor; in other words a scarcity of functioning olfaction.
Possible causes include: head trauma; exposure to pesticides or solvents; antibiotics, antidepressants; cocaine abuse; old age; dementia; secretion disturbances; radiation therapy; epilepsy; sinus infections; hay fever; schizophrenia; vitamin B12 deficiency; brain tumour; long-term alcoholism; stroke.
However, an estimated 6,000 people in the UK are born without a sense of smell. This is known as congenital anosmia.
