The Journal of Medical Case Reports is looking for poets and illustrators to contribute to their quartely letterpressed pamphlet celebrating the poetry of ailments

Issue One
Anosmia

The term anosmia derives from the Greek an (without) and osme (odor); it refers to the absence or impairment of the sense of smell. Anosmia is the inability to understand odor; in other words a scarcity of functioning olfaction.

Possible causes include: head trauma; exposure to pesticides or solvents; antibiotics, antidepressants; cocaine abuse; old age; dementia; secretion disturbances; radiation therapy; epilepsy; sinus infections; hay fever; schizophrenia; vitamin B12 deficiency; brain tumour; long-term alcoholism; stroke.

However, an estimated 6,000 people in the UK are born without a sense of smell. This is known as congenital anosmia.
