Thanks to all NAWE Conference Delegates 2014
Mon 17 Nov 2014
A record number of NAWE members attended our Annual Conference in Bristol, contributing to a hugely enjoyable and informative weekend.
The growing sucess of our Annual Conference is a tribute to the work of the membership overall, but in particular those who so generously engage with our big event of the year. We should like to thank all delegates, and especially our guests, Javier Sagarna and Mariana Torres from the European Association of Writing Programmes (EACWP).

The next edition of the NAWE magazine, Writing in Education, will be dedicated to conference proceedings, and we invite all delegates to submit a contribution – either a written version of your presentation or an account of what you gained in any way – by 1 February 2015. Meanwhile, Steve Dearden's contribution to the plenary debate has already been posted online at https://hi.co/moments/j7yu4u2j.

As discussed at the AGM that concluded the conference, there were also some notable outcomes, as follows.

1. There is now a reciprocal membership in place between NAWE and EACWP.

2. A potential NAWE peer learning network for PhD students will be taken forward by the HE Committee.

3. The editorial board of Writing in Education will be expanded, drawing on the 30+ members who have expressed interest. With a sufficiently large board, the work load involved in reading submissions should be low. Three members of the board will then act as editors for each edition, changing each time, meaning that this larger task should only fall to any one individual once every three years. This plan will be refined by the current Management Committee, led by Liz Cashdan as Chair. More formal guidelines for the editorial board – and those submitting articles – will be drawn up as soon as possible.

4. As a Company Limited by Guarantee, NAWE has a Company Director, currently Maggie Butt, who was Chair of NAWE at the time of the incorporation. It has been agreed to add successive Chairs to the Board of Directors.

As announced in his Director’s Report, and clarified at the AGM, Paul Munden will be continuing as NAWE Director (and Company Secretary) while based for the next three years in Australia. The NAWE Committee and all the staff are delighted that Anne Caldwell will become Deputy Director, and we could not be placing this responsibility in better hands. Paul will of course be liaising with Anne, and continuing to be involved in NAWE’s publications. His Report is available online and being mailed to members receiving the magazine.

The next NAWE Conference will be held in Durham, 13-15 November 2015.

If you have not yet submitted an evaluation form for the Bristol event and would like to use an electronic version, please download the file to the right of this column and return it with your comments to Clare Mallorie.
