Poetry by Heart: Workshop for Writers
Wed 28 May 2014 to Wed 28 May 2014
This workshop will be led by poets who worked on the Poetry by Heart Teacher Days last year, aiming to support other poets and writers keen to work in schools in related ways
A whole series of exploratory Teacher Days in 2012/13 have played an important part in the introduction of Poetry by Heart not only as a recitation competition but a revitalized way of addressing poetry in schools more generally.

NAWE was particularly pleased to be involved, generating new thinking amongst members and devising new ways in which professional writers and teachers might work productively together. NAWE and other leading poetry/literature organizations engaged writers and poets to lead CPD days for teachers throughout the country.

This new CPD day is for poets who have already worked on teacher days and for other poets and writers with an interest in working in this area in the future. We believe that the success of the competition in schools will lead to more opportunities for writers supporting teachers in their work engaging students with poetry. All this will all be directly promoted to schools, thanks to the special edition of the NAWE magazine to be distributed by Poetry by Heart.

The aims of the workshop are:

• To bring together poets who have been involved in the delivery of CPD so far and share their knowledge/ experience with others.

• To explore the special, three-way relationship between poetry, sound and memory, and look at this relationship to produce enriching activities for teachers and learners.

• To ‘capacity build’: we wish to create a pool of writers/poets who are interested and skilled in the area of poetry and memorization, and who can work alongside teachers and learners in the future.

• To encourage poets to share more of their inside knowledge, thereby helping students to establish a close personal relationship with a poem.

• To consider what resource materials might be produced for teachers and others working in this area.

The guest poet for the day is Peter Sansom, director of The Poetry Business and co-editor of The North Magazine and Smith/Doorstop Books. He will be runinng the event together with Anne Caldwell and Paul Munden.

The day is a free event, with lunch included, but places are limited to twenty. If you wish to book, please pay the £10 deposit using the PayPal facility on this page. This will be refunded to all those attending.
