Quondam Theatre is a regularly funded organisation client of Arts Council England, North West.
Andy Walsh worked with the company from 2000-2001, helping groups of young people aged 14-16 from Carlisle and Tyneside express their thoughts and feelings in original drama.
He was always reliable and was trusted by the young people, showing empathy with their struggle to express themselves. All those involved came away from contact with Andy with their self-confidence boosted, their self-assurance enhanced.
In my experience his combination of skills is rare, and it is most unfortunate from Quondam's standpoint that he moved to London!
Andy Walsh worked for the Writers in Schools Project, which is funded by Cripplegate Foundation and supported by CEA@Education and the London Borough of Islington, for a six-week creative writing/drama residency in June and July 2003 in William Tyndale Primary School in London. This resulted in a public performance by 55 children that was very well received.
Andy has wide experience of doing drame workshops in schools and, most importantly, relates very well to children. He motivates and enthuses them at the same time as offering them creative freedom within a clear structure. He is well organised with session plans that set out in detail what is to happen for the first half of the residency and then, building what actually happens, he draws up plans for the second half. Andy is always clearly focused on the task in hand, while being sensitive to the needs of individual children.
Andy is experienced in both script writing and script editing, including writing episodes of 'Byker Grove', which makes his work accessible to children. He is very good at developing children's understanding of how to create not only believable characters, through both words and actions, but also plotting and conflict resolution. Because the project believes that the final scripts should be the children's own work, Andy works hard to help them shape and edit their work so that it comes to life on stage.
I would recommend Andy for any similar work in schools without any hesitation.
