I run a range of poetry and creative writing workshops in schools. As an ex-science teacher I tend to specialise in those which have a scientific, mathematical, environmental or health basis.
I have an off the peg workshop which uses giant toy insects and a series of poems about them, but I also create bespoke experiences based on school's needs.
I worked with Creative Partnerships running Creative STEM workshops and can create creative Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths workshops for your school.
I can work alongside teachers to develop learning materials or directly with groups of children. I have also run a number of CPD sessions around creativity, poetry and science.
I worked as a face to face and distance learning creative writing tutor for Lancaster University for 7 years, and am also available to work with adults.
I have been working as a writer in schools and community settings for over 15 years.

I have known Helen since 1998 when she first started working for the Department of Continuing Education as a part-time tutor. Helen first worked with us as an online tutor - helping to set up our online courses in creative writing. She was instrumental in helping us establish what is now a substantial range of Internet based courses. Her attitude then, as now, was positive, open and flexible. This was important as it enabled us to experiment with a range of ideas and approaches. Since the, Helen has also worked for us face-to-face on a range of courses across the region.
I find Helen a pleasure to work with. She is independent, self-starting, and an innovator. As a team worker Helen communicates well, anticipates the needs of others and works hard. Helen's relationship with students is sensitive, honest and constructive and she works hard to encourage them to develop their own independence. In my opinion she has considerable talent as a tutor, particularly in the area of giving critical feedback. From my experience of Hlen when working as an online tutor, I had the impression that she didn't duck difficult issues with students, and at the same time she never left the students 'bruised'.
Programme Manager for Distance Learning and
Director of Studies for Creative Writing
Department of Continuing Education
Helen's work for us has focused on the development of a poetry-based enrichment programme to engage the interest of learners who have low levels of literacy and numeracy and are at risk of offending. This was a project for the PLUS Strategy, which was funded jointly by the Youth Justice Board and Arts Council England.
Helen is an extremely creative writer who helped us to develop a very flexible and engaging programme. She worked very closely with my team, with the designers and reviewers and helped us to put together something that we are very pleased with in a very short time. Helen has an excellent understanding of the needs of young people and how to run workshops effectively, making them lively, interesting and, at the same time a creative experience for learners. Her empasis is always on allowing young people to evelop their own voice and to create their own poetry in a supported and non-threatening atmosphere, while building their confidence at the same time.
Helen's experience as a published writer and as an educator, together with her wide knowledge of and appriciation for poetry make her ideally suited to the type of role. She interacts very well with others and works well as part of a team.
