I write and perform poetry (emphasis on performance) mainly in Infant, Junior and Primary Schools, but also in middle and occasionally some secondary schools.
My objective is to work with all of the children and teachers in a primary or infant school in the course of a day - or in the course of an hour in very small schools! This is achieved by my combining Performance Poetry performance and workshop, usually in the school hall, whereby children and teachers can gain the fullest experience.
I am happy to undertake these performance poetry workshops with children from 4 to 11 years old, and in groups of 60/70 at a time.
The children participate with me as:
1) I teach them how to enliven language and draw upon simple experiences for performance;
2) I perform my poems, enjoying the 'bounce of the beat and the tapping of the feet' as they experience and absorb the rhythms of 'ordinary language made special'.
Whilst the majority of schools find this to be an excellent and productive training model for teachers as well as a great experience for the children, I do from time to time undertake more formal professional development days. But it's better when the children are there!

Crafting The Language Of Poetry (teacher guide, jointly, with Ben Brunwin)
Many thanks for providing such an entertaining, engaging and stimulating presentation this morning for our children, and our teachers.
You kept children?s interest and enthusiasm going for the full hour and they spoke enthusiastically about it afterwards. In addition, our teachers all found it very high quality CPD. Three of them are relatively new teachers, but very dedicated and hard working. Sadly they have been trained to follow objectives and targets and we (Alison and I) have worked to give them the confidence to teach what the children actually need, rather than what the Literacy Framework requires on a particular week. Thankfully they are developing well and realising the rewards which come from providing first hand experiences and giving children the time to develop their ideas. The sooner nationally teachers are able to appreciate what you are providing and have the courage to go with it the better. We shall certainly invite you back.

I just wanted to say thank you again. Absolutely perfect. It?s so good to see someone performing their poetry, and not only talking about it but setting us up with so many possibilities back in the classroom. Please do use this to help you let other people know about your work.
