Suzannah Evans is a talented and supportive poet and tutor, who runs the 'Write Me a Picture’ poetry workshops as part of the Gallery’s Saturday events programme. Previous workshop attendees have commented that she is ‘a very good tutor’, as well as being ‘friendly, knowledgeable and inspiring’. One of our longest standing workshop leaders, my colleagues and I have collaborated with Suzannah on several larger projects, including the 'Write Me a Picture Reading Showcase’, an event for LIPPfest (Leeds Independent Poetry Presses Festival) and a poetry competition for National Poetry Day 2012 (forthcoming). Suzannah’s professionalism combined with her creativity makes her a pleasure to work with, and her regular workshops at the Gallery are consistently popular with visitors. I have worked with Suzannah Evans in a professional capacity as she was my mentor as part of the Writing Yorkshire Mentoring Scheme. During which I was given funding for 20 hours of mentoring to help develop my poetry. I started working with Suzannah in October 2013 and completed the scheme in August 2014.
My mentoring relationship with Suzannah was well matched and she helped me develop my specified goals of developing my craft and extending my reading of contemporary poetry. Suzannah is a sympathetic and professional mentor who allowed me to work at my own pace. Indeed, the mentoring experience has given a momentum to my writing which has continued past the end date of the scheme.
All of Suzannah’s feedback was well thought out, helpful and easy to apply. She enabled me to see my writing with fresh eyes and helped me develop my own critical facility in drafting and re-drafting my poems. I came away from the experience feeling that I developed my voice and technique. It also had the additional benefit of giving me the confidence to submit one of my poems to the York Mix Competition where I received first prize for my poem ‘Huskar’.
I have no hesitation in recommending Suzannah as a mentor, working with her was a wonderful experience. Her approach was both professional and friendly in tone, successfully striking a great balance between encouragement and criticism.
