Shakespeare's Globe given £1.5m towards indoor theatre
London theatre's drive to raise £7m to build a new Jacobean stage is boosted by anonymous donor

Shakespeare's Globe has been given £1.5m by an anonymous donor to help its efforts to build an indoor Jacobean theatre.

The London theatre is aiming to raise £7m for the new venue which it hopes to open next year.

The donation is in a "matched-giving" scheme, meaning it will be paid if the theatre can raise the same amount.

The Globe's chief executive, Neil Constable, said: "By doubling donations we receive, we hope that this will encourage others to support this important project."

The indoor theatre will seat around 320 people and is intended to provide a more fitting setting for plays such as The Tempest, Cymbeline and The Winter's Tale.
