English and Creative Writing

The emphasis of the course is very much on modern literature, or on the language of the 21st century. In the creative writing part of the course, you will develop the techniques of writing for a range of different purposes: for magazines, for the Internet, for the theatre and even writing for children. The English part of the course will give you insights into how language works, how we make choices when writing and how other people are writing. There is the opportunity to take a sandwich year and study abroad.
Duration 3 years full-time, 4 years sandwich or study abroad
Level BA Single Hons
Cost UK Home/EU: £7,500 pa. International Tuition Fees (from 2012/13): £10,080 pa.

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and practical workshop classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice. The Department has links with several universities around the world, such as JUFE (Jiangxi, China), UTM (Malaysia), Moscow State, Universidad Complutense (Madrid) and the University of Limoges (France). We invite academic members of these universities into our subject area as researchers and as active members of our community. Visitors participate and give seminars and lectures and in doing so share their own cultural orientation and insights into language and literature, corpus linguistics and culture. At the end of their second year, students may study abroad at one of our associate universities in Europe. Alternatively, they can take up a work placement abroad before returning to complete their final year.
