Give It To ‘Em Straight
Thu 16 Feb 2017 to Thu 20 Apr 2017
Poets from Wordsworth to O’Hara have been fascinated with representing life “in a language really used” by the public, but how can this plain language – direct speech, conversational English, platitudes – enliven poetry?
Can the vagueness of how we speak to one another have poetic opportunities dormant throughout it?
In this five week course, we will be looking at poetry as well as short fiction, play scripts and libretti by Eileen Myles, Frank O’Hara, Harold Pinter, John Adams, Lydia Davis, Martin Crimp and more to understand how using plain English is anything but plain.
