Writer-in-Residence
Deadline: Tue 1 Aug 2017
John Hansard Gallery in partnership with ArtfulScribe is pleased to announce an upcoming opportunity for a Writer-in-Residence to work with the Gallery during a unique period of transformation as it relocates to Studio 144 in Southampton city centre

The Residency forms part of the So:Write Literature Development project that aims to develop the profile of writers and writing in Southampton and the region. So:Write is a two-year development strategy and programme, led by Artfulscribe, that includes residencies at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton City Libraries and John Hansard Gallery which is part of the University of Southampton.

We are seeking an experienced writer and/or artist with a history of publishing, to respond to the Gallery’s exhibitions and events programme, the imminent move to Studio 144, and the wider context of Southampton and the Solent region. This Residency represents a substantial opportunity for the selected writer to establish new networks and work in close conjunction with exhibiting artists, the Gallery team and audiences. The Residency will be developed specifically in relation to the selected writer and/or artist, their practise and the proposed focus of the residency.

John Hansard Gallery and ArtfulScribe invite expressions of interest from writers and/or artists who have both a knowledge of and interest in the contemporary visual arts. The Gallery anticipates working with a pro-active, creative and flexible Writer-in-Residence who is also open, approachable and eager to engage directly with the public. Expressions of interest should include a cover letter explaining your interest in this opportunity and proposed focus of the residency (max. 1,000 words), biography, along with links to any other relevant or online content and examples of recent writing practise to be submitted via email as a single PDF or Word document.

The selected Writer-in-Residence will receive via ArtfulScribe an all inclusive fee of £5,000 for a commitment of up to 40 days over a maximum 12-month period with hot-desking provided in John Hansard Gallery. As part of the residency the Writer-in-Residence will be expected to maintain a blog/journal and hold a series of public events. The residency will culminate with an offer of publishing support from ArtfulScribe to produce a small experimental publication in conjunction with John Hansard Gallery. The Gallery is open to the form these could take with the potential for workshops, recitals, screenings, performances, pamphlets, bookworks, zines, etc.
