The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), in conjunction with the A14 Community Fund, is launching a Writer in Residence scheme to encourage creativity based on the themes of travel, roads and landscape

Volunteer Opportunity - A14 Writer in Residence

The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), in conjunction with the A14 Community Fund, is launching a Writer in Residence scheme to encourage creativity based on the themes of travel, roads and landscape. The Writer, who will be based at the Institute’s beautiful Tudor country house at Madingley Hall, just outside Cambridge, will encourage local residents and road users to reflect on the nature of travel via the A14.

The Residency is a key part of the Institute’s plan to engage with road users through workshops, readings, oral history and writing competitions which will be delivered by the Institute’s team of experienced creative writing tutors.  The scheme will also seek to explore the relationship between roads and the environment, including the impact on nature, history and communities.

The Writer will be based at Madingley Hall, four miles outside Cambridge and set in grounds designed by Capability Brown. ICE develops and delivers academic courses for professional development and personal enrichment to a diverse range of adult learners across a range of subjects.

We currently offer around 600 courses a year which include day schools, residential weekend courses, fully online courses, intensive summer programmes for international students, bespoke courses, award-bearing sub-degree courses and part-time Master's degree courses. At present there are approximately 4,500 student enrolments each academic year.

During the Residency the successful applicant will:

  • Help to choose literary extracts about travel, roads and landscape to inspire readers and writers;
  • Participate, where possible, in publicity events concerning the residency and respond to media/press enquiries as appropriate;
  • lead two taster or pop-up sessions to encourage local people to think about travel and the A14;
  • help to judge writing competitions around the theme of travel and the A14;
  • use social media to promote the above;
  • produce a new piece of work inspired by their time as A14 Writer in Residence. This will be included in an anthology of writing produced by the scheme and launched at a celebration on 11 March 2018 attended by the Writer in Residence.

In return for their time, the Writer in Residence will benefit from:

  • Accommodation in an en suite bedroom for a period of three days a week from 6 September 2017 –23 October 2017;
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) provided at the Hall;
  • Travel expenses to and from Madingley Hall (HMRC mileage allowance or standard bus/train fares within the UK in accordance with stand ICE rates).

Applications are invited from established novelists, writers of short stories, creative non-fiction and journalism, poets and those who write for screen (film and television), stage and radio. Experience of teaching creative writing is an advantage. The successful applicant will be required to sign the University’s standard Visitors Agreement.

Informal enquiries are encouraged and can be made to Midge Gillies at: midge.gillies@tutor.ice.cam.ac.uk.

To apply for this opportunity please send a Curriculum Vitae (CV) together with a covering letter (the length of which must not exceed two A4 sides) together with the details of two referees to: ICEHRAdministration@admin.cam.ac.uk.  In the covering letter please ensure that you outline why you are interested in this opportunity and how you feel your skills and experience match what we are looking for.
