WACtheatre Playwriting Competition 2011
Deadline: Thu 30 Jun 2011
The WACtheatre playwriting competition this year is part of WACtheatre’s contribution to the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival. Following the success of Burning Rings of Fire and No Phones on Planet Pluto, we are looking for full length plays on the subject of mental health, or inspired by the Festival themes for this year: memory and dreams.
To enter, you must read WACtheatre’s guidelines on submitting scripts. (Downloadable from our website: www.wactheatre.com). These guidelines form part of the rules of the competition and must be adhered to strictly. Failure to do so will result in your script not being read. Writers should submit two copies of 10 to 15 pages of script (approx 10 minutes) which should be an extract from a longer play, or a piece intended for development. We do not want a synopsis, storyline, back-story or details of how you came to create your particular masterpiece.

Plays can focus on particular illnesses, relationships, or any aspect of life that can affect a person’s mental wellbeing. We are not looking for another One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest!

Eligibility
The competition is open to anyone who is over 16 years, living in the North East of Scotland (particularly those based in Aberdeen City and Shire). Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and must never have been performed, published, self-published, published on any website or broadcast. [Group entries are also permitted: ie a play co-written by two or more persons].

Entry Format
Entries must be in English or Scots (not Gaelic) and typed, on one side of the paper, with pages numbered [see guidelines] and securely fastened. Entries must have a front page bearing the title of the play, name, address, email and telephone number of the writer, with the title on the bottom of all other pages (as a footer). Entries will not be returned, so please keep a copy. We will not accept e-mailed or faxed entries.

Receipt of entry
Enclose a stamped addressed postcard marked 'ACKNOWLEDGEMENT' if you require
acknowledgement of receipt of your postal entry. It is not possible to confirm receipt of entries by phone or email.

Closing date for receipt of postal entries: 30 June 2010.

www.wactheatre.com

Writers put forward by WACtheatre for further development will be contacted by 1 July 2011.

Copyright
Worldwide copyright of entries remains with the author. WAC will act as producer for the
winning play.

Performing Rights
Any plays used by WAC will be free from performing rights.

Selection
Plays will be selected by WACtheatre’s team: Artistic Director Colin Garrow and Theatre
Development Workers Jessica Hernandez, Louise Ballantyne and Angela White. Our decision is final and no individual correspondence can be entered into. We are unable to comment on individual entries other than the winning entries. However, plays may also be developed through our WAC Wednesday sessions.

Prizes
The winning play will be put forward for production by WAC as part of SMHAFF in Aberdeen.
Work selected for production will be allocated actors/director and technicians etc. A small fee may be payable to the writer or writers – however this is entirely dependent on additional funding and the overall success of the production and should not be considered to be a fundamental part of the prize. Any play which, for any reason, does not reach production standard by the start of the rehearsal period (September 2011) will not be performed.

Two copies of your script should be sent to:
