JUMPSTART
Jumpstart
Jumpstart Poetry in the Secondary School

- an invaluable resource for teachers and writers in schools by NAWE member Cliff Yates.

Jumpstart is full of insights into the way writers write, exercises to stimulate new writing, and poems to use as models. It contains a range of contemporary poetry that has been successfully used with young people, and a selection of their responses. It is unique in bringing together work by and for young people, and showing how the gap between the two can be bridged.

Cliff Yates is a poet and teacher whose students are extraordinarily successful at winning competitions for creative writing. He wrote Jumpstart during his time as Poetry Society poet-in-residence. He has worked extensively with teachers and as a creative writing tutor. Henry’s Clock, his first collection, won both the Aldeburgh prize and the Poetry Business book & pamphlet competition.

‘Jumpstart is the best aid to the teaching of poetry since Sandy Brownjohn’s work of the 1980s’ - Gordon Wilson in The Teacher

‘Jumpstart is a classic of its kind: inventive, inspiring and instructive’ - Andrew Motion, Poet Laureate

Available direct from the Poetry Society @ £7.95 + £1.55 p&p

Cloud Chamber

The Cloud Chamber is an online meeting space for poets, writers, academics and specialists in other fields.

It aims to connect practitioners around the country, and to encourage a broader dialogue around the widening of poetry across disciplines.

Led by poet and tutor Cliff Yates, the discussions will raise awareness of poetry developments throughout the country, as well as providing access to a network which may lead to further collaborative work. For the practitioners, this will be an opportunity for skills sharing and utilising other areas of interest to create links with poetry.

The Cloud Chamber is still open for further contributions. If you would like further information or would like to participate, please send a short biography (no more than 75 words) to Angel Dahouk or telephone 020 7420 9889.

The Cloud Chamber is a Poetry Society project supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
