Mentoring for writers

Mentoring is a process through which someone with expertise and experience in your field of work chooses to support you in a time of transition.

Mentoring emerged within business management training, but has recently gained popularity in the arts too. Here we are concerned with writing and writers – and because the circumstances in which writers work are rather unusual, the practice of mentoring is rather different from mentoring in any other workplaces. In particular, mentoring for writers does not necessarily include marketing skills or inter-personal management development – it is more likely to be focused on the writing itself.

Mentoring is the subject of a great many of our enquiries from writers, so we have commissioned several resources about it which you can download here.Start with our Mentoring Guide, which is specifically designed for writers who are wondering about metoring but need to know more.

Coaching for writers

Coaching is all about helping a person get to where they want to be in their professional or personal life. The writer/client is in control – they decide what they want to focus on.

The coach is there as a facilitator to help them to step back and gain new insights and understanding and discover their own solutions. For writers, this can be a very energizing process where blocks to writing, major challenges in the writing process, or new career tracks are explored in a supportive atmosphere. Coaching often takes place over a number of sessions within a 3-4 month period.
