The Brighton Prize 2017
Deadline: Fri 30 Jun 2017
We were founded in 2014 by Rattle Tales, Brighton’s interactive short story evening. Our roots mean we love stories that work on the stage as well as they do on the page

The Brighton Prize short fiction prize is open for entries from now until June 30th. The prize offers local writers the chance to test themselves against their peers from around the globe, and new writers to pit themselves against established writers, to win cash prizes up to £1000, and get their work seen by local publishing house, Myriad Editions.

Background

The Brighton Prize is now in its fourth year, having been set up in 2014 by Rattle Tales, the interactive storytelling event that takes place regularly in Brighton and elsewhere. The Brighton Prize accepts international entries in English alongside those from local and UK writers. Year on year the number of entries has grown rapidly, making it possible to double the value of the first prize this year.

The Judges

Sally O’Reilly:  Best-selling author of ‘Dark Amelia’, ‘The Best Possible Taste, and ‘You Spin Me Round’. Sally teaches creative writing at the Open University.

Candida Lacey: Managing Director of Brighton based independent publishing house, Myriad Editions.

Erinna Mettler: Brighton Prize founder and Director and author of ‘Starlings’ and the collection ‘Fifteen Minutes’.

Prizes

There are two entry categories: short stories between 1000 and 2000 words long, and flash fiction pieces up to 350 words. The winner of the short story category will receive £1000, with two runners up prizes of £100 each. The winner of the flash fiction category will receive £100, with two runners up prizes of £50 each.

The best story from a writer based in East Sussex (that does not win in any other category) will receive a book token worth £100. All shortlisted writers will be offered publication in an anthology.
