Arvon at Home Masterclass: Holding and Letting Go - Writing and radical psychogeography with Will Self
Thu 20 Aug 2020 to Thu 20 Aug 2020
From Proust’s ‘two ways’ at Combray, to the dimensions of Austen’s Mansfield Park, to the twin (municipal water) towers that JRR Tolkien could see from his Midlands window while writing his great saga, place and space have been fundamental to the formulation of creative prose.
Any journey – on foot, by bicycle, car or train – is also a potential narrative. As readers we feel intensely the influence of place and space on a piece of writing.
For me place and space are integral to anything I create and in this session I will suggest ways of engaging with place and space that are immediate.
I will propose the radical psychogeographic method I call ‘holding and letting go’: an amassing of data – topographic, environmental, historic, ethnographic etc. – coupled with an explosive voiding of all preconceptions, so that the human subject once more assumes its place in the world, stripped of ideology and pretension, so able to hear and touch and smell and taste and hear anew.
