National Centre for Writing: The Power of Poetry with Kendel Hippolyte
Fri 11 Oct 2019 to Fri 11 Oct 2019
Gain the confidence to write poems that ask unflinching questions about our world with this relaxed workshop for writers of all levels, led by Kendell Hippolyte. Whether you’re trying poetry for the first time with a friend or a more experienced writer looking for new techniques, Kendel’s workshop is the perfect opportunity to rediscover the power of words.

Using a mixture of informal discussion, writing exercises and time to develop your ideas, Kendel will share:

New ways to approach rhythm
The importance of line break and word choice to create balanced and powerful work
Techniques for marrying sound and image
How to harness your unique poetic voice and compel readers into action.

Described as ‘perhaps the outstanding Caribbean poet of his generation’ (Heinemann Book of Caribbean Poetry), Kendel is an expert in bringing thinking, feeling and action into harmony in his writing. His latest work has tackled cultural and economic imperialism, the environment and the politics of race and identity.

Participants have the option to share up to two poems (max. 40 lines in total) with Kendel ahead of the workshop, with the opportunity to share with the group and receive feedback if they’d like.
