NAWE London Writers in Education Gathering - Date Change
Wed 11 Dec 2019 to Wed 11 Dec 2019
Join NAWE at a free early evening networking event for London writers working in educational and community settings which we're organising in partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London, Arvon, Ministry of Stories and Spread the Word. Please note the date change (from the 4th to the 11th December) due to the national university strike.

This informal gathering is a great opportunity to meet up with fellow writers in the region to swap stories about working in educational and community settings and support one another.

There will be a chance to hear more about the work of NAWE, Goldsmiths, University of London, Arvon, Ministry of Stories and Spread the Word, and participate in group discussions around your practice and career as a facilitator.

You’ll also be able to take part in a taster writing activity led by Laila Sumpton, one of the Writing Program Leaders at Ministry of Stories and a freelance poet, and explore how this could be transferred to other settings.

This event is open to all writers working in school, community, FE and HE settings, whatever career stage you’re at. You don’t need to be a NAWE member to come along.

Date: Wednesday 11 December 2019, 6.30-9pm (refreshments from 6pm) PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE -  ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR THE 4TH

NAWE is the one organisation supporting the development of creative writing of all genres and in all educational and community settings throughout the UK. Member services include the highly-regarded publications Writing in Education and Writing in Practice, events and opportunities bulletin The Writer’s Compass, an annual conference, networking events, public liability insurance and DBS checks.

Goldsmiths, University of London is a well-established university noted for its contribution to Creative Writing, both within the curriculum at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A number of faculty members such as Professors Francis Spufford and Blake Morrison are leading figures in their field. There are several creative writing programmes, including a prestigious PhD in Creative Writing, a very popular MA, and some innovative inter-disciplinary courses such as the MA in Creative Writing and Education, which explores the teaching of creative writing among other things. Its Writers’ Centre runs many events with noted writers and people in publishing giving readings and talks. The Goldsmiths’ Prize, celebrates experimental writing, and has championed some novels which would have been neglected otherwise. Most recently, alumni of the PhD in Creative Writing, Bernadine Evaristo, won the Booker Prize.

Arvon is celebrated for its unique ability to discover and develop the writer in everyone. We run creative writing courses for schools, groups and individuals in a wide range of genres, from fiction to screenwriting, taught by leading authors. Our residential courses take place in historic writing houses in beautiful countryside locations in Yorkshire, Devon and Shropshire. Grants are available to help with course fees. www.arvon.org

Ministry of Stories champions the writer in every child. We were founded by Lucy Macnab, Ben Payne and best-selling author Nick Hornby, who wanted to create a space for young people in East London to become authors. Our writing centre was inspired by San Francisco’s 826 Valencia and resides behind its own fantastical shop, Hoxton Street Monster Supplies https://www.monstersupplies.org/, which has been selling goods such as Cubed Earwax and Thickest Human Snot to London monsters since 1818. All proceeds from the shop go back into the Ministry.

Spread the Word is London’s writer development agency. We are here to help London’s writers make their mark – on the page, the screen and in the world. We do this by kick starting the careers of London’s best new writers, and energetically campaigning to ensure that publishing truly reflects the diversity of the city. We have a recognised expertise in delivering schemes for under-represented writers, such as our current annual London Writers Awards programme to develop and introduce 30 talented under-represented writers to the publishing industry.
