Learn how to write a compelling and gripping crime novel that will attract interest from agents and editors in the commercial fiction market. Aimed at writers who already have some understanding of the crime fiction genre and have perhaps already embarked on writing a crime novel and want some guidance and encouragement.
Do you want to write – and sell – a crime novel? This workshop will teach you the key skills you need, including:
– Choosing a marketable idea that fits the genre
– Developing a compelling lead character (perhaps with the potential to carry a series)
– Structuring a strong plot full of twists and turns
– Creating gripping and suspenseful prose that will hook your reader from the start
– How to find motivation and finish your novel
– How to get published
The weekend masterclass will consist of a mixture of lecture and seminar work on key skills, insight into the crime fiction market, guided writing exercises to develop technique such as building suspense, characterisation, dialogue, and more.
Ideally, participants should have some familiarity with the UK crime fiction market. It would be helpful to have read several crime novels that have been published in 2018.
Claire McGowan is the author of the highly-acclaimed Paula Maguire series of crime novels. She ran the Crime Writing MA at City University London for five years. She now teaches for organisations including Arvon, The Guardian and Queen’s University Belfast.
