It’s clear when to option a novel for a drama, but with non-fiction and documentaries there can be grey areas. Non-fiction authors have complained of an assumption that their work can be drawn upon with impunity and some authors complain that they are consulted or interviewed for programmes but aren't commensurately credited or paid. Individuals don’t usually ‘own’ what they think is ‘their’ subject, programmes in development are not always commissioned; and some evolve over time so that the author is dropped or the initial request for a short contribution can lead to a larger (unbudgeted for) role. There are two sides to every story - what are the problems facing producers and authors in the use of non-fiction titles, and how do we resolve them?
