Artist for Workshop, Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL)
Deadline: Mon 6 Aug 2018
Action for refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL) is looking for creatives who use textiles, writing, sculpture and everything in between with experience of working with young people and a passion for community engagement to run one-day workshops for the Helping Hands-ON Project.

Helping Hands-ON aims to empower Asylum seeker, Refugee and Migrant children living in South London by working together in order to build a 1:1 Pavilion. This space will then be used as a gallery to showcase works created from one day sessions between participants and artists.

We are looking for creatives who use textiles, writing, sculpture and everything in between to run a session with a group of 5-11 year old AFRIL clients. The work will be displayed in the pavilion, creating a weekly changing exhibition. These workshops will expose participants to an array of techniques allowing for enhanced self-expression whilst also raising aspirations amongst the group by exposing them to diverse role models.

The sessions will take place at the Helping Hands Allotment in Honor Oak. The first part of the project, building the pavilion, was designed to encourage kids to learn about the built environment and think about how their habitats may be affecting them. The aim is for participants to ‘own the space’, as many live in temporary accommodation, having no place to play safely outside. Proposed workshops could enhance learning about the environment, react and interact with the structure, or simply use the allotment as an interesting outdoor space to create.

AFRIL is committed to alleviating poverty and social isolation and is especially interested in working with people who have similar goals. Applicants are encouraged to treat the session as a dialogue and use it as an opportunity to be influenced by a group they may not normally interact with.

To apply, please send your CV and an email detailing the workshop proposal including aims, structure of session and how the workshop will engage with your own practice to hermionelaing@gmail.com.

Please also express your preference of available workshops dates:

18.08 / 25.08 / 01.09 (10.00-16.00)

Pay: £120 (£20p/h) + expenses.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email: hermionelaing@gmail.com

Deadline: 6 August 2018
