"On Earth there is nothing great but man" We would like to commission a creative response to these words by Sir William Hamilton for our festival in 2021 (17-19 September). Applications can be from any art form
The Harris Museum, Art Gallery and Library was founded in 1877 by Edmund Harris. Carved into its monolithic architecture are the words:
TO LITERATURE, ARTS AND SCIENCE
ON EARTH THERE IS NOTHING GREAT BUT MAN
IN MAN THERE IS NOTHING GREAT BUT MIND
REVERENCE IN MAN THAT WHICH IS SUPREME
THE MENTAL RICHES YOU MAY HERE ACQUIRE
ABIDE WITH YOU ALWAYS
A quote from a lecture on metaphysics “On earth there is nothing great but man, in man there is nothing great but mind” by Sir William Hamilton, these words would have, at the time ,been part of the great discussion between Church and Science. However, considering “man’s” desperate need to reconsider its relationship with the earth’s resources, we may now consider these words arrogant, or foolish.
We would like to commission a creative response on this subject for our festival in 2021 (17-19 September). Applications can be from any art form and should consider and explain performance or exhibition space needed to present the final work.
Fee £4500 to include all materials and expenses.
To apply please send a proposal of no more than 2 sides of A4, a CV and 2 examples of your previous work to Esther Ferry-Kennington
