Invitation to tender: Evaluation Contract, Ministry of Stories
Deadline: Mon 9 Oct 2017
A one-year evaluation of the impact of a peer mentoring creative writing club.

The Ministry of Stories is a writing and mentoring centre where anyone aged eight to 18 can come and discover their own gift for writing. You’ll find us hidden behind our own fantastical shop Hoxton Street Monster Supplies. Through a range of innovative writing programmes, and one-to-one mentoring, we help young people discover and realise their own creative potential. We build confidence, self-respect and communication skills in both workshops for schools and out-of-school writing clubs. Then we provide a publishing platform for young writers, so these fresh, exciting voices are shared with the world. Nick Hornby, Lucy Macnab and Ben Payne founded the Ministry of Stories in 2010. Since then, around 2500 young people a year take part in our free writing programmes and projects.

MoS has experienced success using adult-child mentoring; all our mentors are fully trained to listen, be approachable, ask open questions and stimulate the young people’s imaginations. Building on this we are delivering a pilot programme of primary aged children directly engaging as mentors for each other. Pupils from years 3 and 5 meet weekly to support and be supported in creative expression, imaginative writing and storytelling. The Ministry of Stories provides resources, training for the children and their teacher, and a method for publishing children’s work at the end of the year.

We wish to understand the nature and effect of this pilot programme in order to:
• develop the programme – the information from the evaluation should play an ongoing formative role
• support the spread of this programme to schools across the UK – the evaluation should help us decide if and how to expand this programme to schools across the UK.
