The Media department at Middlesex University is looking to appoint an hourly paid visiting academic (HPA) to undertake teaching and assessment on the third-year undergraduate module 'Working as a Writer'.

This module is part of the BA Creative Writing and Journalism degree. The teaching role will commence from 27 September 2021 at our London Hendon campus.

We value diversity amongst our students and staff and welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates, regardless of background. We are a member of Athena SWAN, a gender based charter, the Race Equality Charter, Stonewall Workplace Equality Index and Disability Confident.

We are committed to improving employment opportunities for underrepresented groups. We have made a positive commitment to employing disabled people and guarantee to interview all disabled candidates who meet the minimum essential criteria for the role. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates who are underrepresented in this area. All recruitment decisions will be based on merit.

Requirements:
1. Appropriate academic qualifications at postgraduate level
2. Ability to deliver high quality teaching at Higher Education level
3. Understanding of good professional practice in learning and teaching
4. Suitable expertise in the areas of writing for markets, freelancing, and publishing
5. Demonstrable commitment to fairness and the principles of equality and inclusion

Payment for Hourly Paid Academics - Media Department, Middlesex University:
The rate of pay is £51.75 per hour for each hour of contact teaching. This rate is 2.5 x the basic rate which is derived from the first spinal point of Middlesex's Grade 7 (Lecturer), with a yearly increment if the work continues beyond one year. For undergraduate teaching we typically hire HPAs for one or two 12 week terms, and for each term there is a further two weeks of pay at the basic rate for each nominal contact hour to cover end of term assessment.

To apply, please send a CV plus a covering letter to James Graham, Director of Programmes for Writing and Promotion, j.graham@mdx.ac.uk by 10am on Monday 9th August 2021. Interviews will be scheduled for Friday 3rd September.

Please note that before we can make an offer of work, we will require candidates to undertake a ‘Right to Work’ check that will require them to present their passport (and visa if applicable) and their most recent certificate in person at our Hendon campus.
