Poet In Residence: Portsmouth City Archives
Deadline: Fri 30 Nov 2018
The Portsmouth City archives, the written memory of the people of Portsmouth from the fifteenth century until the present, are held in Portsmouth Central Library and Southsea Library. Portsmouth Library and Archive Service is looking for a Poet in Residence to immerse themselves in the collections, responding to the resources creatively, and communicating with and engaging new audiences as part of an Arts Council England funded project called City of Stories which has an aim of increasing access to and engagement with the City's archives.

The Portsmouth City archives are a hugely exciting resource with great potential for inspiring creative writing and art. The archives include documents which reflect the naval and military presence in the city over the centuries, records of the poor, wartime accounts and diaries, records which show how Portsmouth has developed over the centuries, and include an extensive collection of photographs and maps, and special collections such as the Conan Doyle Collection.

The Residency will last from 14th January to 12th April 2019 and the fee is £1,000 including all travel and other expenses.

The exact shape of the residency will be part-directed by the interests of the successful candidate, but what we are looking for will include …

– New creative work produced in response to items from the Archive - to be chosen in consultation with the Senior Archivist (could be film, audio or photography as well as text). This would be a minimum of 3 poems.
– Minimum four blogs or social media posts documenting the Poet in Residence’s experiences and learning through the project
– Facilitation of two poetry workshops using the Archives to inspire writing
– Communicating experiences via social media (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook)
