What I Do

As a developmental editor, I mull over the major elements of a piece (structure, description, pacing, arc, theme, plot, character, etc.) to determine if each is serving the work well. I edit all genres, lengths, and forms of fiction as well as most non-fiction (creative non-fiction, dissertations, memoirs, college essay applications, etc.). I do not read poetry or anything technical.

Short story or CV, I have a talent for whittling words and ideas down to the essentials for the most potent delivery. It's one of my greatest strengths. It requires critical thought and logic, and it has really forced the writers I work with to more keenly analyze their own writing. My approach is also honest. I will certainly strive to heighten and push your work, but I will not sugarcoat.

How I Do

After I've read through your manuscript once, I can let you know approximately how long it will take for me to get you a full critique (for longer manuscripts, after I've read the first 20 pages or so). I will then read it again, perhaps also a third time, then write a letter with my feedback. The letter will begin with elements that work well, followed by what could be improved upon to enhance the piece. After you've given space and time to read through and think over my critique (usually a week), we can then arrange a call to discuss.

Please note that because whatever I read is an early draft and will inevitably change, I will not return your project with line edits/comments.

About Me

I have a BA in English from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and an MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College. My fiction and non-fiction have been published both online and in print. And I've been teaching English grammar, job preparation, and the fundamentals of story development for a number of years.
