Investigating the importance of creative writing on young people's educational and employment aspirations
Mon 18 May 2009
This studentship is funded by Northumbria University's Research Development Fund and New Writing North. Deadline for applications: 5 June 2009.

This studentship will explore the impact of creative writing on young people's educational and employment aspirations. With a focus on how young people's creative writing can stimulate and enhance their social engagement, educational outcomes and employment prospects, the project is interdisciplinary, and will draw on socio-cultural theory, naturalistic observations and quantitative analysis to achieve its research objectives. The project will be directed by Dr Carolyn Jess-Cooke.

'Tristram Shandy and Eighteenth-Century Experimrntal Fiction'

This studentship is funded by the AHRC and is a collaboration with the Laurence Sterne Trust.

The aim of the project is to understand the relation of Tristram Shandy to fictional experimentation in general during the eighteenth century so as to broaden our understanding of Sterne's distinctive contribution to English fiction. The thesis should be submitted either shortly before or during 2013, the year of Sterne's tercentenary, in which there will inevitably be renewed scholarly and public focus on Sterne and his creative legacy. The project will be directed by Professor Richard Terry.

Both studentships offer an annual bursary of £12,940 (revised award pending).

Deadline for applications is 5 June 2009.
