Jean Sprackland to open NAWE Conference 2013
Mon 23 Sep 2013
We're delighted that poet Jean Sprackland will be guest speaker in the first plenary, talking about Poetry by Heart, the new initiative for which she was a judge in 2013.
Jean Sprackland, a former NAWE Committee member, is one of our leading poets. Her latest collection of poems, Sleeping Keys, is published by Cape this autumn. Tilt was the winner of the Costa Poetry Award in 2008, and she is also the author of Strands: A Year of Discoveries on the Beach (Cape 2012), which won the Portico Prize for Non-Fiction. Jean is co-editor with Andrew Motion of the Poetry by Heart anthology, and was on the judging panel at the National Finals in 2013. She is Academic Director of the Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Following the talk by Jean, Jane Bluett will introduce Kaiti Soultana, whose extraordinary recitations won the Poetry by Heart competition in 2013. Kaiti and Jane will then join the Poetry by Heart team in a subsequent conference session to discuss the ongoing project.

NAWE has been closely involved in Poetry by Heart, organizing a range of events for teachers. Some of these involved university lecturers, and the conference plenary will highlight this cross-phase aspect of the project.

Poetry by Heart is an initative of the Poetry Archive.
