Writing in the Goldsmiths allotment

3-5pm in the allotment or EB220 if it is raining

Dr Francis Gilbert (Blue Door Press author & Department of Education and Creative Writing) and Seraphima Kennedy (Programme Director of National Association of Writers in Education, NAWE) will be running creative activities to inspire writing about the Solstice, summer and nature. Participants will be encouraged to respond to the plants, animals and objects on the allotment through poems, life writing or fiction. You are welcome to drop in as and when you are available.

Garlick Man Parade

Arrive by 4.45 at the allotment for departure at 5pm

We will join the Garlick Man Parade to awaken the spirits of the earth and follow the Garlick Man and the Old Nag of New Cross as they wind through the streets of New Cross up to Telegraph Hill, or as it used to be known, ‘Plow’d Garlick Hill’. En route, we will stop off at The Word Bookshop for readings of poetry and prose dedicated to the solstice. After the ‘marriage’ of the Garlick Man and the Old Nag in the park at the top of Telegraph Hill, the celebrations will continue with quaffing and scoffing at The Hill Station Cafe.

Reading and writing activities at the Word Bookshop

6.30pm-8.30pm

Blue Door Press and NAWE will host some longer readings at the wonderful Word Bookshop. Francis Gilbert will read from his novel, Who Do You Love (BDP, 2017), Ian McAuley will read a summery extract from his work, and Seraphima Kennedy of NAWE will lead some fun writing exercises. There will be an “open mic” after this for anyone to read from work they wish to share.
