Lesson 2: Writing in First & Third person


In response to the outputs from Lesson 1, the writer will have produced a short piece of creative writing inspired by the pupils’ outputs, plus a letter to the class explaining his or her creative process. A movie trailer will also have been created to be played to the class before tackling the next task.

The Task: First Person

In Lesson 2, we need to understand a little bit more about how our characters think, how they speak and how they might act. Write a postcard, therefore, from one of the characters that the StorySpinner has chosen to focus on. Write it to someone he or she loves (a parent, a friend, a relation) saying where they are right now (our locations) and what he or she misses about the person being written to.

Talk about something that might have already happened to your character in terms of meeting the other characters, or discovering something secret, sad or special about themselves. Maybe he or she is already thinking about setting out on a journey. Remember to express the emotions that your character has attached to them (Is this an angry or a jealous letter?) Think about the kind of language your character might use. Does he or she use big words or little words? Does he or she write in proper sentences, or use a more casual, chatty style. Are there words or phrases he or she uses a lot?

The Task: Third Person

Give your characters something to do, something to find or discover. Use the templates below to create your own simple passages of third person narrative. Perhaps use the items and locations that you invented in lesson 1. Begin your sentences like this:

For example: Sally looked down at the unmown lawn. She noticed buried deep within the green tufts of grass something metallic and shiny. She bent over, and searched with her hands. Something made a chinking noise. It was a bunch of keys. She could see that there were three keys in all - a big one, a medium sized one and a very small one.

Outputs

The pupils should produce one or two paragraphs of text only. They can work individually or in groups. The StorySpinner will have indicated in the letter to the class exactly which characters to concentrate on. It’s important that not everyone works on the same character, so the teacher needs to ensure that all the characters are worked on by a good proportion of the pupils. Ideally, they should type their descriptions into a Word or Text document. Alternatively, an A4 template can be provided.

These outputs need to sent back to the StorySpinner as soon as possible, by posting electronic documents to the Web site. Pupils' work can be uploaded either as individual documents or as a collated whole. If necessary, paper documents can be returned to the NAWE office by post.

Preparation

Teachers will need to download the new trailer, the writer’s creative contribution and letter to the class. Worksheets may also need to be downloaded from the Web site and printed out.
