4th Annual Creative Writing Lecture: 'A Writer’s Life'
Thu 7 May 2015 to Thu 7 May 2015
The 4th Annual Creative Writing Lecture will be given by Dame Edna O’Brien on Thursday 7 May 2015 at 6.00pm in the Rattray Lecture Theatre
Author, playwright, poet, biographer and memoirist, Dame Edna O’Brien has been called the ‘doyenne of Irish Literature.’ The winner of awards almost too numerous to mention, highlights include the Irish PEN Award in 2001, the European Prize for Literature in 1995, and the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award in Irish Literature in 2009.
O’Brien has played an often contentious but always leading role in developing a voice for women in Ireland since her first novel, The Country Girls, appeared in 1960. Yet her work has travelled far beyond her native Ireland, with Philip Roth describing her as ‘the most gifted woman now writing in English.’ Her recent memoir, Country Girl, attracted widespread critical praise and won the Irish Book Award for Non-Fiction 2012.
