Creative Approaches to Dramatic Writing Masterclass with Emma Adams
Sat 9 Aug 2014 to Sat 9 Aug 2014
The focus over our time together will be writing exercises and discussion… There will be lots of doing

Emma has been running creative writing sessions with a focus on dramatic writing for the last 10 years. She has worked with beginners right through to MA students, and has run sessions for organisations such as Script Yorkshire, Emerge, Keats House, Leeds University as well as being a visiting lecturer at Northern Film School, Leeds.

Emma’s writing is often fantastical and surreal, ranging from dark political satire for adults through to adventure comedy for children. She has had two plays tour nationally: Forgotten Things, shortlisted for the 2009 Meyer-Whitworth Award and Ugly, published by Oberon in 2010 (both Red Ladder). In 2012: Emma was Writer in Residence during West Yorkshire Playhouse’s New Writing Season.

Emma’s work during the last 12 months includes: A site specific play Northern Big Board performed in Shipley Pool (Chol / Slung Low). A one woman sci-fi show Freakoid (Nominated for an Off West End Theatre Award) performed at Ovalhouse, London, Brimming (part of The Enough Project) that toured the north, summer 2013 and Home Sweet Home(Freedom Studios&Entelechy Arts). A magic-realist, multi sensory, immersive theatre experience for older audiences about the joys and trials of aging. On in April 2014 and then touring Autumn 2014.

The Masterclass will be held at Bank Street Arts on Saturday 9th August between 10:00am and1:30pm.

In this session you will explore:

  •  How to get ideas and how to develop them for drama once you have them.
  •  The ‘how’ ‘what’ and in particular the ‘why’ of your writing… and why all of that matters!
  •  The differences between writing prose and drama.
  •  And there will be surprises…

The focus over our time together will be writing exercises and discussion… There will be lots of doing. There will be chances to read your work out but never any compunction to do so… I will also make time for a Q+A about my work / questions about the industry if that’s useful… However, this session will be primarily focused on creating space and time for people to explore and think about their own creative journey.
