Wasafiri is a quarterly magazine for contemporary international literature. Based in London, the magazine publishes essays, interviews, fiction, poetry by leading as well as up and coming writers from diasporic communities and around the world

The magazine also holds an annual writing prize. Wasafiri is hosted by the Open University in London and funded by the Arts Council, England and its co-publisher, Routledge.

The Freelance Digital Co-ordinator role is a new position at the magazine in a small and busy team of 3 part-time members of staff and the Editor, Susheila Nasta. Based at the Open University offices in Camden, this is an exciting opportunity to develop Wasafiri’s online presence with the aim of developing audiences and breaking down barriers to access international literature. Hours: One day a week (7 hours)
Pay: £14.50 per hour

Job Description

Regularly update the Wasafiri Facebook and Twitter pages.
Regularly update the Wasafiri website with copy written by the Wasafiri team and with copy from authors or audio/video clips from events.
Maintain the events page on the website as well as promoting events through social media.
Following an upcoming audit of the Wasafiri website, implement the changes including adding new pages and content to the site, developing new areas of the site (eg academic forum), updating Board biographies etc.
For each Special Issue, research audiences which may be interested in that specific topic in order to get publicity to them.
Keep Wasafiri up to date with developments in social media.
Develop a digital relationship with the Open University.
Marketing and publicity of the annual Wasafiri New Writing Prize through digital channels. Research literary organisations, festivals etc around the world to publicise the competition (particularly important from Jan-July of each year) with the aim of increasing the number of entries.
Undertake any other work which may be needed on a digital basis.

Person Specification

Essential

Demonstrable interest in international literature and creative writing.
Good knowledge of computers and software such as Word, Excel, Office Outlook. Proven experience of working with content management systems and knowledge of HTML.
Experience of successfully developing social media accounts, including Facebook and Twitter to drive audience engagement.
High level of skill in formatting/editing images for online use in Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.
Good organisation skills, ability to plan, prioritise and work to tight deadlines, and take the initiative to follow through on tasks without supervision.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly.
Experience of writing and editing material for a website.
Careful attention to detail.

Desirable

Interest in working in a literary/publishing organisation.
Experience of working within a charity and/or publicly-funded organisation.
Understanding of web analytics

We are looking for candidates to start by early April 2015. It is possible that the hours may be extended to two days a week.
