New Translator in Residence
Deadline: Fri 10 Jul 2015
This twelve-month residency is an exciting opportunity for a translator to get involved in all aspects of Free Word life, from online translations and blogs to events, talks, and school and community workshops
We are looking for a Translator in Residence to join the Free Word team. This twelve-month residency is an exciting opportunity for a translator to get involved in all aspects of Free Word life, from online translations and blogs to events, talks, and school and community workshops.

Over the last four years Free Word has had six four-month long residencies for literary translatorsCrossing Cultures; Telling Tales. With new support from the Jan Michalski Foundation we are delighted to be able to offer a twelve-month residency programme integrated within the broader translation work that we do across our The Power of Translation programme.

Translators are a creative force – artists in their own right – and key to opening up the richness of contemporary world literature to British readers. Yet in a country dominated by Anglo-Saxon or Commonwealth literature, very few translators can live from their translation work alone and need to develop other related skills. Alongside that we need to engage the public in foreign fiction to increase demand.

The Power of Translation programme has three aims:
• to support the professional development of literary translators as artists and broaden their skill set
• to break down cultural and language barriers and promote multi-cultural understanding through translated literature and dialogue
• to get more people to read more literature in translation

Over a 12-month period (from September 2015) a Translator in Residence will work with us to address these ambitions.

To apply please download the role profile and follow the application details provided. The deadline for applications is Friday 10 July 2015. Interviews will be held at the Free Word Centre on Thursday 23 July 2015.

This position is made available with support from the Jan Michalski Foundation
