I write poems, plays and critical essays as Mike Smith, fiction as Brindley Hallam Dennis.
Working under the title Facets of Fiction I offer short courses based at my home in north Cumbria, and workshops elsewhere. For the past few years I have taught part time at Cumbria University, and hold the degree of M Litt from Glasgow.
I am particularly interested in short story form, and have written articles for The New Writer, and the Thresholds, International Postgraduate Short Story Forum.
I also take an interest in novel/short story to film adaptations on which I have written (among other subjects) on my blog at http://www.Bhdandme.wordpress.com/
I have won prizes and awards for poetry, prose fiction, and non-fiction. My work has appeared in magazines and journals, including Stand, Outposts, Markings, Acumen, Cumbria Life, & The Lancashire Evening Post. It has been performed at Theatre By The Lake, Keswick, and by Liars League London, and Leeds.
in 2010 I published That's What Ya Get! Kowalski's assertions (Unbound Press), a series of monologues.
in 2011 I published A Penny Spitfire (Pewter Rose), a novel of the late 1940s.
A collection of short stories is in preparation for publication by Pewter Rose later this year.
Several of my short plays are marketed by LazyBee scripts.
The essay A Single Word, attached below, won a Muriel Carmichael prize for non-fiction at the Dumfries campus of Glasgow University.
