The Short Issue

The Big Issue in the North Trust is running a short story competition in association with The Night Light, an online magazine based in Manchester
The public and vendors of The Big Issue in the North are being asked to enter short
stories, of up to 2000 words, based on the theme of ‘Night’. All stories will automatically
be entered for The Big Issue in the North Short Story Award which will be judged by
The Night Light; you may also nominate yourself for any of the number of the separate
categories such as the Young Writer’s Award or the Genre Fiction Award.

The winning story from The Big Issue in the North short story award will be
published in The Big Issue in the North and the runners up stories will appear on
www.bigissueinthenorth.com.

The competition is open to everyone and people can submit as many stories as they
like. In addition to the main prize, there are several sub-prizes that individuals can
apply to, each sponsored by one of the North West’s leading independent literary
organisations.

The Big Issue in the North Short Story Award in association with Dead Ink Press:

• Publication of your story in The Big Issue in the North Magazine.
• Invitation to take part in The Short Issue reading due to take place in Manchester in
September.
• Interview and news item on you and your story on the Dead Ink website.
• One-to-one career planning and tuition with Wes Brown, novelist, critic and co-
ordinator of the National Association of Writers in Education.

Short Story Categories

Young Writer’s Award in association with The Cadaverine and The Young Writer’s
Hub (25 and under):

• Publication of your story on The Cadaverine website
• Interview, news item and profile on the Young Writer’s Hub.
• Invitation to take part in The Short Issue reading due to take lace in Manchester in
September.

Genre Fiction Award in association with Polluto Magazine:

• Contract to publish one book-length project (subject to editorial approval).
• Free attendance to Dog Horn master class Programme (dates to be confirmed).
• Invitation to take part in The Short Issue reading due to take place in Manchester in
September.

Outsider’s Voice Award (writing submitted by facing social exclusion, see
application form for details) in association with Dog Horn Publishing:

• Contract to publish one book-length project (subject to editorial approval).
• Free attendance to Dog Horn master class Programme (dates to be confirmed ).
• Invitation to take part in The Short Issue reading due to take place in Manchester in
September.

Young Black and Asian Writer’s Award in association with Young Inscribe (part of

Peepal Tree Press):

• Inclusion in Peepal Tree Press’ Young Inscribe Programme (free writer development,
an annual residential, one-to-ones and master class workshops).
• Invitation to take part in The Short Issue reading due to take place in Manchester in
September.

To submit a story, we ask that each submission is accompanied by a minimum donation
of £5 which will go to The Big Issue in the North Trust which helps vendors of the
magazine to improve their lives. Members of the public can make their donation at
www.justgiving.com/theshortissue

When submitting a story you should include the confirmation code you received
when you made your donation at Just Giving. There is an application form available
from www.bigissueinthenorth.com. Click on Events and then The Short Issue.
Pease email your submissions and a completed application form by 12 August to
shortissue@thenightlight.co.uk with your story attached, Big Issue in the North vendors
can drop stories off at their nearest Big Issue in the North office.

Please attach your submissions as a .doc .rtf or a .pdf document.
