Kate Young
I have been a journalist for more than 30 years - and I have edited numerous publications, including booklets and magazines.
I have also been writing fiction since I was a child and I love inspiring others to write too. I have had many poems, short stories and flash fiction pieces published, as well as a 10,000-word Gothic novella.
In 2009, I self-published a travel memoir to raise thousands of pounds for an Isle of Wight hospice. I have also done a number of open mic events over the years.
I hold a BA Hons in Writing and Publishing from Middlesex University, North London, and an HND in Journalism from Harlow College, Essex.
I also have an Introduction to Teaching Creative Writing certificate from Manchester Metropolitan University and I enjoy facilitating creative writing workshops. I have just started my Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET, formerly known as PTTLS).
I am currently doing my MA in Creative Writing
online with Arts University Bournemouth, which I
am due to finish in September 2026.
I am available for collaborating on creative writing projects, and running workshops.
I have had numerous pieces published in a wide range of anthologies, dating from 1993 to the present day, and my work regularly appears in The Figlet magazine.
I had a 10,000 word Gothic mini-novella published as part of the Paul Cave Prize for Literature 2023, and I was runner-up in both the microfiction and flash fiction sections of the 2025 Paul Cave Prize. I was also shortlisted for the Wildfire Words 150 Prize 2024 and I was runner-up in the Farnham Open Poetry Competition 2025.
More recently, I have started working on my first novel, which was longlisted for the 2026 Farnham First Five Pages Prize.
In 2023, I established Island Scribblers, an Isle Of Wight-based group for writers and illustrators, which has both an online community on Facebook, and occasional face-to-face meetings. At the start of 2026, I also founded Wight Nature Writers - again a community on Facebook, with some in-person workshops.
I have run a handful of workshops to date (April 2026), and facilitated many Island Scribblers sessions. My workshops have been centred around nature writing so far, but I can also run flash fiction or poetry sessions.
